TWW TFK Ride

Hmmm...... What's the one phrase I could say about the Used Parts/Montara Mtn. Ride? Ultra Technical? Lots of riders? Lots of Poison Oak? Lots of parts? Lots of Fun? Forget it....how about all of the above! We started out with low clouds around Pacifica, Jon the co-ride leader took the helm with 28 riders and I the co-ride follower made sure no one was left behind. Everything was pretty uneventful getting to Montara Mountain, during the climb up and through the Devils slide trail or should we call it Poison Oak Trail. Rob, David and Fredrick had to take off, so they left us at the top of 1 Mile. Everybody gets through the Devils slide trail and we all take a break at one of the many viewpoints on the ocean side of Montara Mtn. Lets start with the climbing! The hill climb winners up The Wall were Loren T. and Dawn W. who both won "the hill climbers jerseys". Being a good co-ride leader, Jon had to show Loren where to stop at the top. On to "The Crack" here was our first technical/extreme trail of the day. Jon, Ron, Scott and Mark were able to clean the big drop in, experience pays, good job guys! Eve and Dawn were their awesome selves cleaning most of the technical sections that Montara had to offer. We all regrouped at the bottom and started our way up to The Mile, another technical/extreme course. Special mention to Peter Sterlacci who was the only one able to climb up the "Y".

Going down The Mile was pretty hairy with big rocks, little rocks and ruts constantly in your way, I wish someone would clear all that up, just kidding guys! Another regroup at the bottom and off through the Eucalyptus Forrest, this is where the locals built jumps and berms. A couple of us were airing it out on this one section of an uphill jump. On our way to the bottom of the trail is where we suffered our first casuality, Mike takes the infamous jump and lands nose first into the dirt. He suffered a deep cut on his chin and a loose tooth. Mark and I were having our own contest..... See how many Band Aids and Duct tape we could put on this guy. Mike, we hope things are going ok with you and you are healing well.

20 some odd miles from the start, we get to Jon's house and start the BBQ and raffle. Special thanks to my wife, Gigi for preparing the BBQ and my daughter Rachel for picking and calling out the numbers for the raffle. By the way all of the jerseys, hats and water bottles that we used as door prizes and raffle winnings were given to us as a token of appreciation from Trips for Kids

I think Dawn came out a winner this day, Hill climb, Most parts donated, Xtreme video raffle and PO. The only thing she didn't win was the GT Ghetto Fabulous hat.

Oh yeah, I should mention the reason why we all came together for..... THE USED PARTS! I really didn't expect to collect this amount of parts. Everyone gathered up their parts and parts from their local bike shops to donate to Trips for Kids. Joel and Dawn were tied for the most parts donated, good showing from the Hub members. With the 5 complete Pentium computers, a hand truck and all of the bike parts and bikes that were donated from the ride, I think that Team Wrong Way set the standard on what a team is all about!

Generious Bike shops that donated their parts...Thanks Guys!:

PRESS RELEASE

TEAM WRONG WAY TO SPONSOR BIKE PARTS DONATION RIDE FOR TRIPS FOR KIDS

Key Player in the Mountain Bike Industry Raises the Bar for Racing/Riding Clubs.

SAN RAMON, Calif., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Team Wrong Way announced last week that they will sponsor a mountain bike ride to collect bike parts for the non-profit organization Trips for Kids.

Long-time Team Wrong Way member Bob Knight got the ball rolling by simply asking, "I've got a lot of old bike parts laying around - anyone know of an organization I could donate them to?" Active Team Wrong Way participant Nick Relampagos (nixmtb@aol.com) ran with the idea and planned a used parts donation ride.

The ride will take place at Montara Mountain on June 3, 2000 at 10am. Fellow active Team Wrong Way participant Jon Heim (jon.heim@sri.com) will co-lead the ride and provide the venue for an after-ride BBQ and soiree.

Trips for Kids is a non-profit organization that gives unfortunate youths a chance to experience mountain biking through group rides and trips. Used bicycle parts are collected and complete bicycles are built by their volunteer staff. They also have a store in San Rafael that sells used and new parts to subsidize their trips. Anything that belongs on a bike will be accepted as long as it is in decent shape or repairable. Marylin Price, director for Trips for Kids was excited and thankful that Team Wrong Way is putting on this event.

Team Wrong Way is a mountain bike club based in the Bay Area (California) whose primary goal is to RIDE, RACE, and DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO HAVE A GOOD TIME (well, within reason). Team Wrong Way has been in existence since 1992 when an incorrect race course sign changed the course of time. Team Wrong Way is headed up by Joel Northrup, and led by a veteran core group of 19 avid mountain bikers ranging in the age of 30-53, all with diverse backgrounds and at least five years of mountain biking experience. While Team Wrong Way's goal is to have fun, they also promote responsibility, accountability, and professionalism in the sport.
