So that people aren't over or underwhelmed at our rides, we've decided to institute a ride rating system. We'll post technical level of the ride as well as fitness level most likely necessary. Unless otherwise noted, there will always be frequent re-groupings, as these are intended to be group rides. "+" and "-" will be used to further refine ride ratings.

Technical level:

  • "XXX" - gnarly rock gardens, baby heads, big drops, rim taco'ing, frame breaking, near vertical chutes, body armor appropriate, fewer than 5% of MTB'ers can ride this terrain, nasty, technical stuff.
  • EXTREME - Singletrack with extended steep climbs or descents over rough terrain; many tight switchbacks and turns. Portions may require portage.
  • ADVANCED - Singletrack with very steep and/or rocky sections; narrow trails; exposed side slopes; downhill-side-sloped sections.
  • INTERMEDIATE - Steep, rutted fire road; singletrack with extended sections that can include medium or large rocks and roots; stream crossings; exposure; long singletrack descents.
  • BEGINNER - Smooth singletrack or fire road. Obstacles such as rocks and roots might exist but are not numerous.

    Fitness level:
  • EXTREME - 5.5+ hours
  • ADVANCED - 3.5-5.5 hours
  • INTERMEDIATE - 1.5-3.5 hours
  • BEGINNER - 0.5-1.5 hours

We chose time as a measure of fitness level, because some rides, like Rockville, you'll spend 3 hours riding less than 10 miles.

January 28 - Ride Series DH, Hollister, CA [RACE]

Cool DH series brought to you by the folks at Pure Juice Productions. Great course (holds up reasonably well with the rain), decent organization, crappy "push your bike to the top of the freakin' hill" hike, but overall a good time.

TWW Race Coordinator - Ron Chai

February 24 - Trail Maintenance Day, Rockville Hills, CA [VOLUNTEER PROJECT]

9AM. Come join TWW and help out our great friends at Rockville Hills Park. You all ride out there, so why not give back to arguably the best place to ride mountain bikes in the Bay Area? Your volunteer effort will go a long ways in helping to keep Rockville open for generations to come. Please RSVP as we have committed to getting 20 volunteers to each project.

TWW Volunteer Coordinator - Mike Gin

February 25 - Ride Series DH, Hollister, CA [RACE]

Cool DH series brought to you by the folks at Pure Juice Productions. Great course (holds up reasonably well with the rain), decent organization, crappy "push your bike to the top of the freakin' hill" hike, but overall a good time.

March 22-25 - The Sea Otter, Laguna Seca, CA [RACE]

Come join TWW at our traditional season opener. A great way to break out of those winter doldrums. This race is one of the biggest around, so let thousands of people laugh at your fat ass as you bring up the rear in the Beginner class. We'll organize a dinner one night and all kinds of wacky stuff during the weekend. Bring your two-way radio, so you don't miss a beat.

April - Napa Valley Dirt Classic, Angwin, CA [RACE]

This is quite possibly the best race you'll do all year. Epic loop - one long ass loop with tons of singletrack and weaving through the trees, whoop-dee-doos on 'roids, and the infamous hike-a-bike from hell out of the valley (well, at least for us out of shape, slowass riders). Great organization, great folks putting on the race (you'll appreciate the many volunteers on the course cheering you on, giving you water, and not laughing at you), and a fund raiser for the college.
