The Rockville Trail Day was a huge success. Over 30 people showed up (including some of the regular volunteer crews). We accomplished quite a bit in only about 2 hours of work (we only did 2 hours because the ground was so dry - with the very limited moisture, the major projects couldn't be done - next time). We split into three main groups, with off-shoots of those three groups. One group head over to the lower Tilley side, and strengthened a section of trail that was sliding away. We installed several wood logs and rebar to help strengthen the trail. Another group cut a new bypass just adjacent to the above work group. This is a cool little trail which follows the natural curves and ups and downs of the terrain. It winds through some trees and then meets up again with the old trail. They also worked on installing a new passage through the fence (posts, concrete, etc.). They cut a long trail in a short period of time. Special award to Nick Relampagos for spending most of his time building a nice bermed corner. The other group headed out to the moonscape side of the park. This is where we start and finish our ride on the normal route. A bunch of work needed to be done there, as drainage was not good (in the moonscape area as well as the trail above it). I didn't get a chance to see this work, but I'm sure it was a job well done. Perhaps someone in this crew can give us some details on this work. This was a fantastic effort - you folks that participated can be proud of yourselves. Next time you ride there, you can say, "I helped build this trail or I helped maintain this trail." That's a pretty good feeling. It was great also to show that mountain bikers could mobilize in large numbers and pull this off. Perhaps the skeptics will start thinking differently about us. We'll keep surprising them by showing them were responsible riders and that not all mountain bikers are A-holes. This volunteer work is proof that we respect what we've got and respect other trail users. We're more than willing to give back to the sport we love so much. Thanks again to all who attended (and especially the regular Rockville volunteers & Ranger Teri for showing up on her day off). See you at the next one (late fall/early winter when there is some moisture in the ground). Mike Attendees (pat yourselves on the back - I think I got everyone, if not, sorry.
