Race Report by Rich Henthorn

All right. Here we go.

We had a good turn out. Eve, Mark, Susann, Joel, Peter, Jon, Scott Seery, Keith White, and myself. We also had Chuck and Janice (friends of the Davidsons), a newcomer Mike, and Kirsten played race day hostess due to an injury. The race got underway at 10am. My odometer measured just over 19 miles. The entry form says 22, but I wasn't complaining.

Eve came in first, but the results were messed up and she didn't protest the results in time (or something like that). So no medal, but I think everyone acknowledged that she was the winner.

Susann also came in first, and received the medal.

Scott had a good race and finished 3rd (with medal).

Jon spanked everyone in his category except 3 and scored the 4th-place medal.

Keith went the wrong way more than once and DQ'd. Congratulations Keith.

Janice also took a wrong turn somewhere and lost about 4 minutes. I'm not sure how she finished.

Peter, Joel, Mark, Chuck, Mike, and myself were pretty much also-rans.

Grassroots race. Race results were handled manually and, obviously, was a tad error-prone. The course was marked, but not enough. Sometimes important turns were marked with only a single red arrow on a 4x6 white posterboard. This isn't very good when racing in a fairly dense forest. Singletrack was great. Hot weather. Good, if a bit small, lunch afterwards. Worth doing again.

The camping and potluck dinner was a smash once again. Thanks go to Mark and Eve for arranging it and for everyone who participated.

I'm sure more reports will be coming in the next couple days.

I will contact the race directors and get the complete results and forward them to the TWW scorekeeper. Great job everyone and congratulations to the medal winners!

Race Report by Keith White

Fellow Fat Riders,

As I'm sure you've become accustomed, I'll give my recount of the days events in my own peculiar style.

After last Thursdays hammerfest, I figured I'd be in good shape for the race. Even with the serious case of poison oak I got after doing the full on endo into the bushes.

I drive up the morning of the race, starting at O' Dark 30. Get up there about 8:30 thinking the race started at 9:30, but this was my first mistake of the day. Fortunately this gave me extra time to adjust a few things and get preped for the race. Nice group of TWW folks round and a lot of friendly faces everywhere I turned. A really good turn out. Come 10:00 we star to line up. Again, TWW dominates the starting grid. What a sight. To my dismay, I see Mike Urbina who I know is one fast motha. Off we go. Good start this time, long climb starts to spread people out a bit. The lead changes about 10 times on the climb. Joel is up front for a while, then a couple of guys I don't know. Mike takes the lead, then someone else...finally I take the lead and we crank the rest of the climb. I hit what I thought was the top in 1st, but soon I'm passed by Mike and figure there's plenty of race so no worry. The race is on.

We start down a fire road, and over some really big water bars. I do the flying nose wheelie off of one, and barely hold on. Don't use that front brake in those situations, completely the opposite of what you want to do. This wierds me out for the rest of them. Then we dive into the single track. It's tight and twisty. Sometimes rocky, but not as bad as the last race. It's fun, but I feel like I'm losing ground. And I know when you put Mike in a down position, there's no way I'm going to keep up. But, it's a long race, so no worry.

A bit more double track, so tight downhill singletrack, then some undulating singletrack where I get passed by another guy in my class. Shit I must really be off. We end up on the tail of another guy and just keep moving until we dump out on the fire road. The guy who we were tailing cranks it up and is just having a ball off of all the jumps. He's doing little cross ups every chance he gets. Looks cool. I'm focussed on the other guy in my class. We are ripping down the fire road, then back into the climbing singletrack.

We catch up to Pete S. The other guy passes after a while, but I don't see a good place. Then, bam, down Pete goes. Some trail snake or something grabbed his front tire. I ask if he's seen Mike...oh and are you alright...first things first.

Off I go in pursuit. The other guy is stuck behind a couple more. These guys are almost fast. He gets past, I get past one, but the other one I cant pass. Soon back out onto fire road. I pass and start climbing. About 5 minutes later the guy is still hanging and says "Aren't we supposed to be on singletrack?". Down the fire road, and look back, the arrow pointing the other direction. We missed a turn. Back we go. Cruzing, then arrows point right then straight, so I make the turn and start climbing. The guy yells at me from behind..."Are you sure you're going the right way?" ...SHIT what does it take. Nope, going the wrong way. Turn around and head down more fire road. Soon the guy in 2nd passes me again to re-take 2nd(looks like he took a wrong turn too). We do a bunch more climbing.

At this point I'm thinking this is the longest 11 mile lap. I'm going to have serious trouble making another loop. I loose the 2nd place guy in some singletrack(he ahead of me). Then break out onto a fire road. Down hill...relax...good. Cruzing down...faster...wow, this is long. Some guy heading toward me flags me down and asks "Do you know where the race course is?" To which I reply 'You mean I'm not on it?'. Then I look over and see Mike(race leader) on some singletrack about 50 yards away. 'Hey Mike, are you on the course?'...he stops and relays that he just found a marker. So, we cross country and hit the trail and off we go. More down, more up, more turns, more pain. How long can 11 miles be? There is no way I'm going to make 2 laps.

Then I see a corner I recognize, it's the one right before the start finish. Cool, lap one down and I aint doin' another. People start hooting. I get passed in about the last 20 yards and it's the guy in 2nd place again, passing me for the 3rd time with out me ever passing him. They stop us and pull our tags. Wait, the race is over. What happened to lap 2? I tell the officials to dnf me due to not knowing how long I was off course and how much trail I might have cut off. I figure I would have finished 3rd anyway, but that wouldn't be fair.

So, too all the finishers, I salute you. And to Mike U, You are the man!

Keith

PS. Do we really have to do another one on the 11th?

Race Report by Jon Heim

Back in the saddle again. I sorta decided not to do much XC racing after I started DH racing. Eve's description of Boggs 2.0 and Mark and Dave's photos from Boggs 1.0, however, presented just too compelling of a case to get back into XC. Plus after commuting by bike 3 days last week (52 mi r/t) I wanted to see what I had under the hood. After begging for a ride Mark and Eve relented and we drove up Sat. morning. Thanks Mark and Eve! We set up camp and had a great time preriding, eating, and laughing around the campfire. The race almost seemed secondary.

Come race time the next morning, red jerseys were everywhere, very cool. There were about 6 or 7 of us in my class (sport 35-44) alone. My strategy was simple: keep Keith White in view. it worked great at the start up the fireroad. I think I am finally figuring out how to start - get out with the leaders but don't sprint and go anaerobic right away. One or two guys pass us and I'm hanging back from Keith a little bit. I overshot the first r/h into the single track and hit the needle bearings, um, I mean pine needles and boom, down on my right side but up right away. One more guy passes me and says "good job", not sure exactly what he meant. I reeled him and soon I'm back on my plan. Following Keith again It seems like we passed one guy, but it gets a little hazy here. We came down some killer single track and made a hard right onto a terraced section. Slam! down again on my right shoulder - this time a little more carnage, a gash and scrapes on my shoulder and leg, derailed chain. I realize I've been riding like I'm on my DH bike with 2.4 Moto's underneath me. The 2.1 Nano's are great tires but after doing so much riding on my DH bike I'm used to the larger meats. Note to self: Chill. By now I had lost touch with the leaders and was alone in the forest, nobody in sight in front or behind me. I was just enjoying the great single track. See our cheerleader Kirsten at the sport loop crossover. Pick up the pace a bit. After I got onto the sport loop I caught Peter S. at the water station. I toast him with the water bottle and press on. From this point on the course was very poorly marked. The singletrack was awesome but I kept backtracking and slowing down wondering if I was going the right direction. I think I overshot the last stretch home as I ended up back on the fireroad we started on. I crossed back over right before the finish and saw people coming down a different section above the fireroad. After crossing the finish I saw Peter S. who had come in before me, even though I passed him. He indicated he was on course the whole time. I think I went about 3/4 of a mile extra. Whatever, ended up 4th anyway. Too bad about Keith dnf'ing himself, I would have been 5th otherwise.

Other than the poor course marking, MTB racing doesn't get much better than this. Fun foresty singletrack, camping, cool people. Maybe I'll do a few more XC races... Congrats to all the other racers. TWW snagged some more podiums, and Eve was robbed.

Jon

p.s.. Thanks Susann for the ride back home.

Race Report by Peter Sterlacci

All,

Boggs was a great time: great course (although poorly marked), great food on Saturday night, great laughs around the campfire (especially Dave's 'hypochondriac/claustrophobic word switch), great fun.

Up until the last minute I wasn't even sure if I would go as my wife was in the hospital from Tuesday to Friday morning with viral meningitis. However, by Saturday morning she was feeling 100% better and was OK to be on her own. So, off I went to join Mark, Eve, Jon, Susann, Scott, Angie (who made a killer soup), Rich, Dave, Linda, Kirsten, and a few others for a Saturday camp out and pre-ride.

The pre-ride was the 'pre-ride from hell'. It just seemed to go on forever. Not that I minded all the sweet singletrack, but it just did not end. At one point we found a section of the course that was as Mark put it 'very raw'. It did not look like it had seen much action by bikes. Lots of overgrown areas which made it hard to know if you were actually on the course. I decided to try out using a water bottle and small saddle bag instead of my camel back. I figured that it would be nice to avoid the camelback on my back during a hot race. I quickly discovered that I felt naked w/o it. I kept grabbing for the hose which was not there. The final blow was when I was climbing up some singletrack and I dropped the water bottle which Susann practically ran over. It was then that I decided to forego the water bottle idea for the race.

I raced in Sport class for the first time, not because I am feeling any faster than before, but because I did not want to drive 3 hours simply to race 11 miles. Anyway, I was grouped in th 19-34 year olds. Usually, the class is 26-34, so I was not expecting to be surrounded by a bunch of Stanford University punks. I knew at the start line I was in for tough competition. There were 12 people in the class and I simply chanted my infamous mantra: "Just don't finish last". On the first climb I was quickly passed by the 3 Stanford guys and others. I looked back and saw 2 people behind me. "Just don't finish last" kept going through my mind. I picked up the pace, but was feeling tired within the first few miles. I finally passed 1 more guy and found noone in front of me. At a hard right turn into some singletrack I noticed about 8 people huffing it up the fireroad. They missed the turn and were doubling back. "Excellent", I thought. Thank God for the pre-ride. I hauled ass and was hoping that at least 1 of them was from my class. The next thought in my mind was that at some point Keith and Jon would pass me. Sure enough Keith passes me just after I manage to fall. Don't know why, but down I went. Keith asked if I was OK and then powered on past me. About 10 minutes later I here an creaking bike behind me. It had to be either Jon or Mark. Sure enough it was Jon. I decided to keep him at bay for as long as I could. When I hit the long fire road climb I noticed noone behind me. However, on the last bit of the climb I turn around and there is Jon. "Damn" I gotta push harder. Finally, I decided to let Jon get past me at the water station towards to start of the Sport loop. We toasted each other and off Jon went. At this point I was alone. Noone in front and noone behind. I was feeling better and did not want any other TWWers to pass me. "Just don't let Joel, Mark, Scott, Rich, or Dave pass you". The singletrack in the back was a blast, but poorly marked. I cross the finish line w/o oth8th, but who knows with all the crazy ordering they were doing. I just remember the look on Jon's face when I comes across the finish line seeing me standing there drinking a cup of water :-) (Sorry Jon)

It was a blast and congrats to all those who placed: Eve, Scott, Jon, Susann (her first 'first').

Race Report by Dave Longinotti

Don't have time to do a race report right now.. Pesky Work is rearing its' ugly head..But I figured I through out some comparisons between the two races:

CSM

Course CSM: Longer/but better rythym
Lions Club/ More Road/Poor Course Marking/Weird sections of new single track.

Start ORder: CSM: Sucked/Senior Sports started just AFTER Masters/Vet Sports Too many faster riders coming from behind
Lions Club: Order made sense: Vet SPort then Vet Women/ then Sport Sprouts/ then Beginners

Tee Shirts: a Draw then both gave shirts...

Do Again: DEFINITELY, either one. Maybe even both.

Boggs Mt. Classic

Linda and decided to bag the Davis Double and go back to Boggs.

We got in a little earlier due to taking the Silverado Trail and arrived about 2:45 and found the campsite. Rich, Mark&Eve, Peter, Janice+ Friend, Jon were there. Joel, and Kirsten would arrive later.

Linda and I rolled off a little early as we wanted to take the pre ride easy. We followed a Toyota pickup that was marking the course with Lime, (but they only made it a fraction of the way around)..

I quickly started to realize why the past accounts of the course varied so much.. The Bogg Mt. Bash and the Bogg's Mt. Classic used DIFFERENT COURSES!!!

The "Bash" has two identical laps that are 13 miles long.. The total course is 13 mi. per lap and is probably 10 miles single track . The "Classics" uses the same real estate but never repeats the same ground so the Beginner loop is over 14 mmiles per Rich's computor and the second loop is maybe 5 to 7 miles.. Rich had 19 for the whole race.

Again, the BBQ and company Sat. Nite was great.

The starting was much better with the Senior Sports starting ahead of the combined Vets& master Sports.

TWW had a huge prescence in the Vet/Master Race withn 6 riders.. (combined 35+&45+ maybe 20 riders) Myself, Keith White, Jon, Joel, Rich, and Mark. (who did I miss??) The Classic goes at least MILE farther on the road than the bash.. Thus it is Roady Heaven (at least for while)..

Keith and Jon got the hole shot with some others.. I didn't get my pedal and was wading thru the field, Rich came by and I jumped onto his wheel. This is 15 to 20mph stuff DRAFTING WORKS!! INTERESTING NOTE:.. At the BASH the 45+ sports started combined with the 45+Experts.. The experts rode the first climb at roughly the same pace as Jon and Keith in Vet SPort.. I get the feeling that Vet Sport is a heavily sandbagged class..

I was working on others wheels but I never quite made to to lead bunch but they were just 20/30 meters up the road.. I had planned to try and pull some of the team here but it wall all I could do to keep on Rich's wheel..

We made a left onto a steeper mid Ring Climb..I settled to a comfortable pace and looked around for Rich .I was planning to pull over for Rich at the top of this climb and let him onto the descent but he was 20 meters or so back so I figured I would tempo along and let him by later. The first road descent before the 1track had a lot of rock and some water banks. Since both Jon and Keith had trouble their I not sorry I went slower.(Keither did a front wheel landing and Jon crashed)..

Note: To get a 20 mile Sport/Ex race with no repeating, the Classic added about 4 miles of road and 3 miles of 1track to make 20 mile race compared to the 26 mile (2 lap race at the bash).. Only about 3 miles of single track towards the end of the first lap was new..

Once on the 1 track I rode better than last time.. I managed half of the switchbacks with feet up compared to zero before. Toward the end of the 1st lap I noticed Joel behind and asked if he wanted to pass but he said no. I was working to stay ahead it worked for a while.. Then we got a creek crossing that I had trouble with the day before except I heard a LOUD SNAPPLE when I went for my 30 cog to climb out in my mid ring.. I got off to remount the chain but I saw I had broken a spoke.. I thou8ght about try to re true the whee.. (releasing the two non drive spokes but decided ti wasn't worth it(maybe a bad choice, the wheel was rubbing the break pretty bad).. I wrapped the spoke on another and continued. Scott came by and asked if I needed help, but I waved him on. time lost was about 1 minute.

. The HEAT was really getting to me.. My Camelbackw as empty and my bottle was half full !!

I was worked my way the new WEIRD 1TRACK.. ( Pine tree trees like slalom poles I thought it was cool!!).. I made it to water station.. I stopped to taken extra whater to pour on myslef and dump into the bottle. I saw two TWW jersey's going up the road!!.

I rolled up the second road climb and almost caught up to Mark Davidson at the top.. I onto the single track.. a few yard later the bike was handling wieard.. I thoguht the rear was flat, but it was fine(( twas the front!!)..

I was suffering from the heat..My first poirtiy was to find a shady spot!!.. As a Roadie, I'm not into fast tire repairs, if there's not follow vehicle or wheel pit as far as I'm concerned the race is over.. I changed to tube carefully discovering the 1 inch thorn that cause the flat.. Total time was over 15 minutes.

Rolling again it took a while to get my legs working , but still much better than last time. After a while I came to another water station and took time to take an extra bottle and dump one on me.. I rode the sport loop better than last time.. YES, I did get lost once, (actually I went the RIGHT WAY but I had to go back and make sure!).. Time was 2:21:40, Scotts was 2:01 I think.. Subtracting the 15 minutes I was 5 minutes off his time which is pretty much what I expected.. Looking at the other riders in class I was 6 of 7 with my actually time and would have been 4th (again) if i'd subtracted the flat time time.. It was nice to be able to start with the other Vet Sport TWW riders and be able to hang with them at least temporarily.. Keith and Jon are awesomely strong..

The scoring system was primitive, (tear a tag off your number and pin it on a board, but the BEAUTY OF IT IS IS"N"T TOTALLLY VISIBLE to the contestants. You just walk over and see where you are in the order, and you can SEE if they've got you are not right away, not just some guy sitting with a Lap top) Somehow Eve's finish was missed, possibly because the scorekeepers weren't paying attention, so she didn't get credit for winning.. (SORRY EVE, BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE MADE SURE SOMEBODY TOOK THE TAG AND PUT IT IN THE BOARD)

A fun race. The same two guys were 1,2 in my race ahead of Scott Seery 5 minutes or so. Next time I hope to push Scott Seery a little harder.. Looking forward to Bud Light...

Dave

Race Report by Joel Northrup

Great race even though there could be some improvements, and it's great that they are trying. Everyone had already taken off on the pre-ride when I had arrived, so I was able to get lost all by myself on the pre-ride. The night before the race was a great way to relax and the pot luck dinner was fantastic! A few mosquitoes were a bit pesky, but manageable with some repellent. I'm sure everyone had a great time. Even with the "Dog Woman" to keep our conversation going and and and Scott, what in the heck are you doing over there with dem damn barking dogs. Oooh, and he's actually talking to her....eeeeks!

To race day....the course was fantastic, even though I went the "Wrong Way" at least once on both the pre-ride and race. It was pretty HOT up there at Boggs. The start was a pure roadie dream, with about a 3 mile run till you hit the first single track (where a few missed on the DH). The trail conditions were perfect and would recommend taking a trip up there for a ride or camp out (just remember to bring plenty of WATER as there is none up there and TP and maybe a gas mask - primitive facilities).

We all had a great race even though several timing mishaps and award errors occurred (to be fixed next year going computerized). I'll have some awards photos soon. While we were waiting for the awards, it appears that a few TWWer's were interviewed by the local papers and we all had a group photo as well. They should be sending me a copy in the mail and I'll post it when it arrives.

Overall, it was fun and that is all that counts!

Oh and TWW did a good deed after the race. We help the Clampits, Jethro and Misses Clampit to get their dang truck jump started even though our legs were totally fried. Dead Battery, gas fumes...Team Work!!! Chug, chug a lug, cough, cough...vrrrroooom and off they went with Jethro hangin off the back. Oh, he was soooo happy :o) What a sight!!!!

ps. Even though some may feel otherwise, I think Jeff Hane's description was pretty much right on....FUN course!!! Thanks for getting us up there.

Joel
