TWW at the MVCSA Bike Donation Event

Event Report by Mark Davidson

It was a wonderful day in sunny Silicon Valley and a great day to build and fix bikes. A modest but effective group from Team Wrong Way participated: Loren "Mr. T" Thomas, "Roadie" Rich Henthorn, Peter "Chinpoko" Sterlacchi, a special guest appearance by Scott "Gearhead" Seery and of course, your humble narrator. Also appearing was my former neighbour Ammon.

Greg Davis was running the event in the absence of David Fork. He paired each TWW member with another volunteer. Working on old bikes presents many engineering problems. Sometimes we had to get creative to piece together a bike from obsolete or cheap components. It was interesting and challenging work. It really brought out the McGyver (sp?) in all of us.

The parts storage was really well organized. A gentleman named Ralph did a wonderful job of organizing all the bikes and parts in the storage locker. It was a pleasure to go in and easily find the correct parts for the job at hand. For example, all the cables were placed in separate baggies with the lengths of cable clearly written on it. All the parts were clean which also made them easy to work with.

I didn't get a final number of bikes that we assembled. However, Greg, Ralph and Jack really appreciated our expertise and encouraged TWW to participate in future MVCSA workday events.

After the event, Scott, Loren, Rich and Peter went to pre-ride Santa Theresa.

The MVCSA bike donation event will be on December 16th and there will be two more wrenching sessions before that. They have about 60+ bikes assembled and they want to reach a goal of about 100 before the holidays. I would encourage others to volunteer for this event next month. It's fun, it's only 4 hours of your time, it's for a great cause and they supply the pizza! --Mark
