TBF MTB Race

Race Report by Brenton Hamilton

It turned out to be a great day for Team Wrong Way with podium finishes for Kirsten (1st place is the Sport women 30-39), newbie Jen (3rd place in same category), newbie didn't catch his name who finished 3rd in the Novice 30-39 and yours truly with a 3rd place in the Sport men 40+.

With this race, I now truly qualify to wear the Team Wrong Way jersey. My category takes off with the Sport 20-29 on a long fireroad stretch. I am about fifteenth entering the short section of single track. I make up some ground thru this section and pass a few more by the car park before entering the next section of single track. I am feeling good and contunue to pass riders. About 3/4 way thru the first lap I am pretty sure I pull into the lead - can't see anyone ahead of me now. I keep powering along trying to stay focussed on the direction arrows. I exit a single track section onto a paved road and start to climb it. As I am continuing down the other side I keep looking for the next arrow guiding me into a single track but it never comes. This is not good. I finally turn around and head back the way I came. After about 1/4 mile I see where I messed up and rejoin the pack.

Entering the second lap I am not sure where I stand until I see some familiar jerseys that I passed at the beginning of the race. I keep plowing ahead passing as many riders as I can. Finish 3 of 22 in 1:32:13. Congrats to first place Chris Holmes - great job.

Not as glorious of a finish for me as compared with Brenton and Kirsten, but it was a great race on a super fast and fun course. Some parts were a bit muddy and you had to cross through about 4-5 huge muddy bogs. But, the rain actually made 90% of the course tacky. The traction was amazing and you could hit every turn super fast. I finished 21/44 in the Sport 30-39 category with a time of 1:36.35. My category was very competitive. My time in the Sport 19-29 category would have landed me 8th place!!! Anyway, I had a blast and would recommend this race for the future. Peter
