Cool MTB Race

Race Report by Brenton Hamilton

I have heard a lot about this race so Sunday morning, not having anything else to do, I drove the 2 1/2 hrs to Auburn to take part in this mudfest. And i am sure glad i did - it turned out to be a blast. The race is held in the town of Cool and consists of two 10 mile loops made up of roughly 85% fire road (90% of which seemed to be covered in about 2 inches of slosh) and 15% single track. John Hillstrom took off in the group before me and that was the last i saw of him until the end. I was into the race only about 1/4 mile and my glasses were already covered in mud. There were a couple of good climbs and one rocky descent that greated you at the bottom with a river crossing about 2 feet deep. I only had one close call when I took the wrong line thru a puddle i thought was a couple of inches deep - tuned out to be about a foot deep! Fortunately i didn't endo. All in all, a great race. The results will be posted in about two weeks, but based on the jersey tags, I think i finished 6 of 23 in the Master Sport 40-45.
