Race Report

CCCX MTB #2

Race Report by Peter Sterlacci

The second race in the CCCX series saw a good TWW turnout even though the weather was not ideal. I felt good at the start and was maintaining a good pace with the lead pack of about 7 to 8 of us. Then it happened. I went into a sharp right-hand turn that was loose and sandy. Bam!!! Down I went. I hit the ground really hard and even hit my head. I was a bit dazed and dragged myself to the side of the trail. Racers went flying past me and B-Ham asked if I was OK only to see a dazed and confused look on my face. I thought about giving up, but decided to move on. I rode with Frank for the rest of Lap 1. In Lap 2 I had to pull off to the side to fix my saddle which was bent out of shape due to the fall. At this point I am convinced I am dead last in my category. In Lap 3 I look back and was surprised to see 3 racers in my category. Damn! I am not last!! This was all the motivation I needed and I kept at. I did not want those 3 guys to catch me. I crossed the line before them and was completely spent. My wife took a picture of me with all the sand/dirt on my face from the fall. My helmet had a nice ding in it and a nice crack. Thank God for the quality workmanship of Bell helmets. Anyway, I actually finished 16/22. Not bad considering the time lost on the fall and seat repair. The guys at CCCX put on a good race. Can't wait for the next one.
