CCCX #5 Race

Race Report by Jenny Impey

CBeautiful day to be racing last Sunday! Smaller race turnout this time, only about 10 ladies in the Sport Women class. I was tied for 5th in the series, with 2nd through 5 places very close in points, so I thought I'd see if I could shake things up and possibly bring home some schwag. I started off the race in the lead, and quickly wondered when someone was going to pass me. After a few miles of being out in the front, I knew I had some women on my tail, but was beginning to like the idea of staying in first, so I kept pushing as hard as I could.

The rider who was in 2nd place in the series couldn't afford to drop back too far, and she was impressively on my tail most of the race. I'd gain some distance at certain spots, such as one section that required making a sharp right turn directly into deep sand with a sandy ledge to ride up. I was able to stay on my bike each time (albeit taking a crappy line while looking at the smoothest line), while some had to dismount.

Quite a few sandy sections on the course, as usual for this venue. Take away the cyclocross sand and give me ROCKS anyday! I just don't see the point in sand! Sand is for the beach, but do we specifically take our bikes onto the beach for a sweet ride? No! Sand is for castle building, waves crashing, beach parties; not for bike riding!! I digress...I stayed out in front for the whole race, which is quite a miracle. On the last lap, a woman was right on my wheel on a flat road section when I swallowed a bug Ambrose syle, though luckily it was much smaller than the pterodactyl that flew down his throat at the NVDC. I was coughing and hacking, but able to stay ahead, and thought: hmmm, a little extra protein to push me home? From there on, I gave it all I had and was able to maintain 1st, moving up to 3rd in the series. Good job to Paul, Peter, Dave G., Valerie, Isaias, and to the Punk (Frank) for also making 3rd in the series!!
