Skeggs Trailwork Day Saturday Nov 17!!
 |
A total of 17 TWW'ers, too many to list or remember showed
up on Saturday for trail work at Skeggs. A good part of them
Tuesday Night Pen riders, did I twist your arm that hard?
Grant Kern and Mike from Mid Pen were leading the way. They
gave us a quick rundown on issues regarding the preserve and
even gave us handouts on building rock waterbars.

Epic. Longinotti said it would be. I kinda scoffed, thinking,
"how the hell could a race between someone who hasn't raced
since 1999/really hasn't ridden much in the past 1.5 years
and a DHer be epic?" Well, this one lived up to all the pre-game
hype. This one was worthy of the term epic. And to top it
off, both of us were riding singlespeeds.
You guys read all about the bet - the Daddy vs. Downhiller
Duel (DDD). The stakes were raised a few days before the race,
with the loser having to wear a skirt at the post-race BBQ.
This clearly motivated the challengers.
The day started out with perfect weather. And quite a turnout from
TWW. Thirteen racers flew the colors proudly:
Me, Scott Schlachter, John Hillstrom, Nick Relampagos, Keith White,
Peter Sterlacci, John Street, Loren Thomas, Bob Lofland, Ken Jeffery,
Dean Thomas, Mike Urbina, Dave Longinotti

TWW Shows up in Force at the 8 hour
of Lake Sonoma! August 5, 2001
 |
An incredible representation by Team Wrong Way at the 8 hour
race in Lake Sonoma.
Nick showed great leadership and motivated a bunch of us
to show up for this race. Not that we need a lot of motivation
but Lake Sonoma in August is usually really, really
hot at this time of the year.
The weather was a lot nicer (read cooler) than previous years.

Well, I certainly didn't put my money where my mouth was.
But did I honestly expect to? Puh-leeze, I was just trying
to get some juices flowing for this fun-filled event. It sure
was a great time. Kudos to Keith for putting on a great event
(he even did an opening ceremony in full Olympic/toga garb!).....

The First Groovy Gravity Games is
a Huge Success! May 6, 2001
 |
Well, our FIRST EVER DH race has come and gone. And based
on the input of you, the racers, the race was a great success.
We had 126 registered racers participate. We eliminated the
$1/shuttle fee and ran them FREE all weekend. We gave out
over $10,000 worth of schwag at the raffle including the coveted
Mountain Cycle Tremor FR-1 frameset.
Marla Streb donated some loot for the raffle too. She kicked
booty in the Pro Women's field and then promptly headed out
on her motorcycle to have some throttle twisting fun.
What else? Internally, things went well too, with the exception
of a couple of glitches. But we learned OH SO MUCH from our
first effort. That will help to make our next race even better.
Thanks for putting up with our few mistakes and some heated
exchanges. We'll do our best to raise the bar even higher
in the future. And thanks for all the nice comments - your
input is greatly appreciated.
Hope y'all had fun! Take it easy and see you at the next
one...

More Waterdog Trailwork Dates: April
21, May 5th and 19th
Friends,
The early spring projects have gone well at Water
Dog Lake, in Belmont, and the trail is now over 1/3 done! We now
need good turn outs for the next work days in order to finish the
trail this season and be able to ride it this summer.
The next work day will be Sat April 21, California
State Trail Day. This THE day to come out, if you only work
one day a year, this is the one to make. Please make time
to show the land managers and the rest of the trail community how
mt bikers can do their share of trail work.
We will also work Saturday May 5 and Sat
May 19. We meet at 9 am and work until 2 or so. We're
flexible, if you can only work part of the day, that's fine, all
help is appreciated, just let me know when you reply. So, fill
up my in-box with your replies with your date or dates of choice
and I will send you meeting time/place details.
Let's finish this trail this season!
Braille Trail Walkthrough Sunday
March 18, 2001
This weekend Loren, Robert and True joined the Braille
trail preview party to check out the proposed trail modifications.
We were joined by equestrians, hikers, and mountain bikers, each
offering different ideas and views.
Surprisingly, most of us agreed on the changes. It
was great to hear that the trail could keep most of its technical
features such as log crossings. The catch is that the trial must
be accessible by ATV. So there will need to be some modifications
to accommodate this.
The major concerns are were the trail crosses creeks
or runs near creeks. The forest service wishes to protect the fish
population by reducing silt runoff. The major reroute will be at
the lower section. This reroute will likely add to the enjoyment
of the trail by offering some nice scenery and fun trail! A few
steep sections running along creeks in the upper sections will likely
be rerouted as well.
A lot of the trail mods are intended to keep the trail
dry year round. The land manager doesn't want to deal with seasonal
closures, but hopes to educate people on the practice of waiting
two days ater a rain to use the trails. This is a great deal!
One other note is that the trail stewards have
been pleased with the reduction of illegal trail use. They feel
the reduction of use is a sign that the community is pleased with
what is happening and I think they are right. There is a lot of
work to do on this trail before June. I believe that the first work
day is Sunday April 1st. I think TWW should give their full
support for this project.
Race Report: Iron Angels Mtn Bike
Race March 4, 2001
Susann Novalis races her second XC race of the season.
It looks like 2001 is going to be her year.
Well, I really squeaked under the weather wire
on this one. Yes, heavy rains and thunderstorms were predicted for
this afternoon in Angels Camp but the morning report just said rain
so I decided to give it a go.

Race report: Cool Mtn Bike Race February
18, 2001
Susann Novalis writes up the first XC race of the
2001 season.
The words of wisdom from other TWW members was
that the Cool Mtn Bike Race Feb 18, 2001 would be a real mud fest
and no one else was going. Nevertheless, I sent in my entry form
on Monday 2/12 as required and then watched the weather reports
all week....

Water Dog Trail Work Report Saturday
Feb 17, 2001
Lots of gratitude to spread around as many helping hands participated
in Saturday's effort. To Team Wrong Way in general for such a
large turnout, but to Tom Kramer for organizing and to Joel Northrup
for bringing much needed additional tools. Alex Fernandez brought
much appreciated, and timely, bagels. And to John Ott, a non cyclist,
who moved alot of dirt on that lower switchback. Way to go to
one and all. We are now 90% done with the lower S/B and built
well over 150' of new trail; good job! Thanks again to one and
all,
Berry T Stevens
There are two more days of trail work at Water Dog
in the next month: March 4 and 17. Click here
for details. Please consider working on the trails if you haven't
done so this year. Trail work is the best avenue for keeping the
trails open to mountain bikers. It's also good for your trail karma!
Brand Spanking New TWW Site is now

strange thump, thump, thump music, a wrist that's threatening to
turn into an RSI
and a wife who was feeling a lot like a widow, the new site is finally
live!
