(Make sure you hit "reload" to ensure the most current schedule)

So that people aren't over or underwhelmed at our rides, we've decided to institute a ride rating system. We'll post technical level of the ride as well as fitness level most likely necessary. Unless otherwise noted, there will always be frequent re-groupings, as these are intended to be group rides. "+" and "-" will be used to further refine ride ratings.

Technical level: (thanks ROMP)

  • EXTREME - Singletrack with extended steep climbs or descents over rough terrain; many tight switchbacks and turns. Portions may require portage.
  • ADVANCED - Singletrack with very steep and/or rocky sections; narrow trails; exposed side slopes; downhill-side-sloped sections.
  • INTERMEDIATE - Steep, rutted fire road; singletrack with extended sections that can include medium or large rocks and roots; stream crossings; exposure; long singletrack descents.
  • BEGINNER - Smooth singletrack or fire road. Obstacles such as rocks and roots might exist but are not numerous.

    Fitness level:
  • EXTREME - 5.5+ hours
  • ADVANCED - 3.5-5.5 hours
  • INTERMEDIATE - 1.5-3.5 hours
  • BEGINNER - 0.5-1.5 hours

We chose time as a measure of fitness level, because some rides, like Rockville, you'll spend 3 hours riding less than 10 miles.

December 11 - Rockville Ride, Rockville, CA [RIDE]
    Time: 10am

Why the hell not? We had so much fun on the November ride, I'm going to make this a monthly ride for the fall and winter. Only severe rain cancels this ride.

Description: technical riding at its best. It's not called Rockville for nuthin'. 8-12 miles of mostly singletrack, including rock gardens, stairsteps, steep drops, smooth rollers, tree lined trails, and limited climbing (yeah!). You don't have to be in super shape for this ride, but you should have some MTB skills. This is not a first time beginner ride. However, you're skills will improve regardless of what level of rider you are (assuming you don't break anything). Plan on a late lunch afterwards. Expect about 3 hours for the ride. If you've never ridden here, you're missing out on some great riding (you generally won't find this kind of riding anywhere else in the Bay Area). I know several of you who could use some help on your technical skills - you should make the ride. Plenty of re-groupings.

Directions: get to the 680/80 merge at Cordelia. This means taking 680 north across the Benicia bridge, or heading east from 80/SF, or west from 80/Sacramento.

Exit Suisun Valley Rd off of the 80. If you see Scandia Fun park on the right when heading east on 80, you missed the exit. If you see the 680 off ramp when heading west on 80, you missed the exit.

Head north across freeway on Suisun Valley Rd. Solano C.C. will be on right. Follow until you hit Rockville Rd. Turn left. Follow for a bit and look for fenced in parking on the left. Carpooling is strongly recommended.

For time reference, plan on about 30-35 minutes from Walnut Creek (680/24 interchange). Difficulty: technical level - ADVANCED; fitness level - INTERMEDIATE(-). Ride leader - Mike Gin

January - Mt. Diablo Ride, Clayton, CA [RIDE]
Time: 9am (ride starts at 9:30am sharp)

Description: Joel's Mt. Diablo ride series. This ride starts on the Clayton side (Mitchell Canyon) of the mountain - meet at 9am, ride leaves no later than 9:30am. There have been some serious epics that have resulted from this ride. Plan for potentially nasty conditions (i.e. 50mph winds, sideways rain, etc.). But also, it could be beautiful. Plenty of climbing (almost all dirt to the summit - you'll ride the road from Juniper campground to the summit - at least 4,000' of total climbing). The sweet technically challenging singletrack around Devil's Elbow awaits. Then the screaming rough and fast downhills. And then just enough climbing to make it painful. Good winter ride, as the ground holds up well to rain. Plenty of bailouts - and they're pretty much downhill.

From wherever you are coming, you need to get to the 680/24 interchange in Walnut Creek. Please tell me everyone can do that. Just in case - from SF - 80E, 580E, 24E, to interchange; from peninsula - 101, 92W, 880N, 238E, 580E, 680N to interchange.

Take the Ygnacio Valley Road exit. Turn right You will follow YVR for quite awhile. You'll go up and over Lime Ridge and near the Cal State Hayward satellite campus (to the right). You'll come up on a stoplight - Alberta Way. Turn right here. Then take a quick left on Pine Hollow Road. Follow Pine Hollow Road until you hit Mitchell Canyon Road. Don't drive too fast on Pine Hollow - it always seems like there is a snoopy just waiting for fast driving MTB'ers. Turn right on Mitchell Canyon Road. Follow until you come up to the parking lot. I believe it is $3 to park. Parking is somewhat limited, so carpooling is recommended.

My time estimate from the Ygnacio Valley Road exit to the staging area is about 25-30 minutes.

From Benicia and points North - 780S, 680S. Exit Chilpancingo Parkway/Concord Ave. Head east. Concord Ave. will run into Galindo and Willow Pass Rd. Turn left on Willow Pass Rd. Follow Willow Pass Road for 3 blocks and then turn right onto Colfax/Clayton Pass Road. Follow Clayton Pass Road across Ygnacio Valley Road/Kirker Pass. Then follow until Mitchell Canyon Road. Turn right and follow to parking lot. It should take about the same time following this route.

Difficulty: technical level - INTERMEDIATE; fitness level - ADVANCED(-). Ride leader - Joel Northrup
