When: June 5, 1999
Where: Dimond Canyon (between Hwy 13 and Hwy 580), Oakland
Why: To help a good cause
What: Continued construction of a connector trail which will allow persons to hike and bike from MacArthur to Joaquin Miller (I think).Five TWW'ers showed up for this project - Joel, John Dillow, Scott Seery, Charles Price, and me. Initially, it looked like us, Ryan of BTCEB, and Jim (the guy hired by the Friends of Sausal Creek who was heading up the work). But as we walked to the start of the trail, more people showed up. I'm guessing the total was 12-15 total, with people coming and going at different times. The TWW'ers worked for about 5 hours.
The trail is a singletrack, with an amazing series of switchbacks. The drop into the canyon is several hundred feet, and very steep. We cut a bunch of singletrack into the slope. Charles Pickens, BTCEB, was an animal. He led the initial push through ivy, non-indigenous plants, as well as poison oak. Hope you didn't get poison oak too badly Charles. John Dillow worked right with Charles too.
Anyhow, we accomplished quite a bit - actually more than expected by Jim. There is still plenty of work to do though (retaining walls, finish work, and more trail cutting). We may have to go back and help them out (assuming Jim loosens up a bit - you know, we are volunteers).
Thanks to all who participated. It was hard work, but rewarding as usual. Following, Joel, Scott, and a couple of other volunteers went riding. Sounded like a fairly tough, technical ride.
