Well, this was our first attempt at race promotion. Seeing that we were trying to be different (to go with our team name), and not being able to find any really cool venues for an XC race, we tried our luck with the Friday Night Dirt Crits. These were held at Club Moto, a nice little motorcycle park on the north side of the 580 freeway at the base of the Altamont. They had lights for night riding and short little steeps and wicked dropoffs (most of which we stayed away from - especially after Bob Knight spoiled his pants after riding off of one without really knowing what he was doing). It was great - we advertised racing under the lights and being able to see the entire race course.
The course was pretty short, I think you could finish a lap in 5 minutes or less. I really don't remember anymore. It really was quite fun - no major hills but fast, fast racing which would end up hurting you in the end. We had four on the schedule, but only did three. Our turnout was really good for our 2nd race - of course, I was in Europe missing it. The attendance dropped off at the 3rd race, so we cancelled #4. Too bad, as I probably could've gotten "Mr. Involvement" Vernon Glenn from KRON to race in it. Oh well.
Some pretty cool highlights included Big Rick Stewart and Larry "Bubbles" Brown announcing our race on Live 105 (when Live 105 was a cool radio station). Several racers said they heard it and showed up. Big Rick even showed up one night, but froze his arse off and left pretty quickly. Overall, it was a great experience and we did learn a lot from it. The most important thing we learned though was NOT TO HAVE AN EVENT ON FRIDAY NIGHTS WHEN TRAFFIC WAS HORRIFIC ON THE 580 FREEWAY. There were reports of 2.5 hours from the peninsula. Yikes.
Here is the article that appeared in the San Jose Mercury News. Pretty fun.
